I was feared getting jumped downtown when there's no one around but luckily, it has never happened. Two reasons: first, the regular Marriott was booked when I registered and second, it was like $100 more per night. Believe it or not, I like cities (I grew up in a bad neighborhood (Kensington) in Philadelphia, so I like to think I have 'street smarts' but they didn't work for me in San Francisco). And I also like walking when it's not too hot out. And the fact of the matter is...it didn't matter where I stayed - I wound up where the conference and then the downtown area is anyways, I just had a much longer walk to/from than most. Many people did stay at the Courtyard Marriott.
