A couple of months ago I applied the latest firmware update for the T-Mobile@Home/Linksys router and have not experienced any issues with the service since. In particular the ‘blue light’ special (service outage). I, with the help of some great readers/comments, was pretty certain that the reason the blue light was going out on the router (and hence I would lose service) was due to my ISP, Comcast, changing my IP address. This is to be expected since broadband (in the USA at least) for consumers like myself typically requires dynamic IP assignment. For me, once every one to 2 weeks my IP would get changed by Comcast.
Well….since applying the firmware update a couple of months ago now, my IP has not changed. At all. I looked at the router settings and nothing changed that I can tell. And I seriously doubt that Comcast helped out T-Mobile by secretly switching me to a static IP service.
Has anyone else noticed their IP remaining unchanged since the firmware update? This can’t be a coincidence. During the last two months I have tried forcing the IP change (which I learned later that you can’t) by unplugging/rebooting the cable modem numerous times, and although unrelated to the T-Mobile@Home service I also switched operating systems, going from Vista to a dual-boot of Ubuntu and XP. My IP address has remained the same.
Is this odd?

There seems to be an ongoing problem with Comcast internet and T-Mobile. I had T-Mobile@Home for a month and it stopped working. Just shut down the phone, the internet, everything. Using an old router in place of the TMo, I could get internet with no problems. T-Mo and Linksys finally (3 days) resolved the problem and got it working again. They apparently had to contact Comcast. 2 weeks later, down again. 3 T-Mo/Linksys routers later, T-Mo nor Linksys could make it work for more than a few minutes. Prowling through all the settings repeatedly it was discovered that Comcast was somehow grabbing the reality of the Linksys router and promptly (probably automatically) changing the IP address. 9 changes in less than 1 hour! T-Mo finally surrendered to Comcast and refunded all my money. Then, 3 days later, I got a packet of info in the mail from Comcast boasting of how great their own phone service was and how reliable it was compared to other services. I have since found several other folks who experienced similar problems with Comcast and T-Mobile@Home phone service. Coincidence? Maybe, but…………………
Well, I’ve never completely lost service. A few times during the first month I did lose service temporarily, but I just needed to reset my Linksys router and it would be fixed.
Did you have another router in front of your T-Mobile router? Did you change *any* of the default settings of the T-Mobile router? I’ve found that folks who change settings or try to use other routers in front of the T-Mobile router often are the folks who can’t get the service working steadily.
